Scarlino can be seen from far away, since it is perched on a hilltop like so many towns in the south-western part of Tuscany.
There is a medieval fortress at the top of the town, and the town spreads down and across the hillside below and has increased over recent decades. The streets are steep, but charming, and the views are naturally spectacular. The town has some shops and a few restaurants. It is situated 8 km from the beach, 12 km from the big resort town of Follonica and 40 km from Piombino, where you can catch a ferry to Elba.
