This fine medieval town is situated amidst beautiful surroundings in the heart of Umbria approx. 50km from the regional capital of Purugia and around 30 km from Asissi.
For history buffs, the town has a lot to offer: a beautiful historic centre built around a medieval town hall Palazzo del Municipio, the church of San Michele Arcangelo with its frescoes from the 1500's, the medieval church San Francesco, the Romanesque monastery San Felice and much more. In Gualdo Cattaneo's surrounding area, there are a number of castles that are certainly worth a visit. Of these include Castello di Montecchio from the 1000's located on the Roman Via Flaminia, Castello di Castagnola as well as the well-preserved Castello di Moricchia from the 900's. The town comes to life in July when a music festival is held in the centre. Many different genres of music can be heard and enjoyed along with a glass or two of the lovely Sagrantino wine. The town also has its own Palio dell'Arrampicata. It is somewhat different from what many probably know from Siena in Tuscany. This is held late August, early September. The town also has a good shopping options as well as a couple of excellent restaurants and cafes.
